It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Mountaineers. Losing to Kansas makes sense, of course. After that game, though, this WVU squad hasn’t been ultra impressive. They were supposed to win against Northeastern, but then came a loss against an unranked Oklahoma team. Every team has off nights, right? No big deal. Until we can only pull out a 3 point win against Oklahoma State, albeit putting away Cade Cunningham and his 25/9/3 that game. Then finally a loss against Texas.
Yes, Texas was higher than us in the rankings, so we should have lost that game. The problem is that we were up with two minutes left to go, and the team just fell apart. Not playing defense, not boxing out, settling for long jumpers, basically the opposite of what WVU basketball has been known for the past couple of years.
It seems that, so far, the loss of Oscar Tshiebwe has been a bigger loss than expected for the Mountaineers. You obviously lose a big body and someone who can box out and get rebounds at a high level, not to mention the low post offense that can be brought to the floor. I’m not sure what the best course of action should be for the line up. Do we go small and run four guards and Derek Culver? Do we go super big and run three forwards with McNeil and McBride? Who knows?
The next game for WVU isn’t until 1/23 against Kansas State, and then two days later we play Mac McClung and Texas Tech. We have a few days to figure out the best course of action. I know the players will put in the work, and I know that Bob Huggins will put in the time to find the best lineup for this team going forward. Hopefully they won’t make me sweat too much for the rest of the season.
