According to an anonymous NBA agent, when asked where they think DeMarcus Cousins will end up, they believe that it is with the Boston Celtics. My entire life, I’ve been a DeMarcus Cousins fan. I mean that. WVU played Kentucky in the Elite 8 in 2010, and even then, I couldn’t help but be a fan of Boogie. Even right this second, I would love for the Celtics to have a legit Center, and one of my favorite players in the league all in one. The question I have is, why now?
I’ve written on it before, but just in case anyone missed that post, the Celtics…kinda…super suck? Like, a lot? Don’t get me wrong: the Celtics NEED a Center. I love Daniel Thieis, and Tristan Thompson has been…okay I guess, but we could use the extra help for sure. Cousins can score when we need it, he can stretch the floor enough to where you have to respect the shot, he can rebound, he can play good team defense, and he is a sneakily underrated play-maker. My question is really just, why would DeMarcus Cousins, who can literally sign with whoever he wants, pick this Boston Celtics team?
At the time of writing this, the Celtics are 15-15, and playing the Dallas Mavericks tonight, so there’s a good chance that we end up under .500. We need more size, on top of all the things that I listed above, but it isn’t like we’re the best destination for him by a long shot. The Lakers just freed up a roster spot today. The Nets are on a roll and clearly ready to compete for a title, and even the Miami Heat, although they have struggled, have the pieces to make it back to a championship. I’m just confused why Cousins has the world at his fingertips, and he’s potentially thinking about joining a struggling Celtics squad.
I’d be more than happy to have him, I really would. I think that a starting five with him in it would be really hard to compete with on multiple levels. On top of that, I like Thompson and Theis as bench/spark plug guys anyway, so it would all work out in my eyes. It’s not like we could offer him a lot of money though. Right now, the Celtics have -$7.7 million in cap space, so it would have to be for a league minimum, or a mid-level exception. Maybe I’m wrong and Cousins is willing to take a pay cut in order to win a ring, but right now, I’m skeptical.
Just so we’re all clear, I would love a potential Boston/Boogie connection this season. I would have loved for him to sign with us a couple of years ago, but I’ll always welcome one of my favorite players playing for my favorite teams. Maybe I get my wish this year, even though it would be quite unexpected. With all of the seemingly better situations he would have to choose from, I won’t get too excited, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
