You know, when I saw this game on the schedule however many weeks ago, I knew that it was going to be a rough game but I don’t think I realized how rough it would be. Coming into this game Houston is 7th in the nation, and to make things worse for us the rest of the Big 12 season, they’re the 3rd highest ranked Big 12 team in the country behind Iowa State and Arizona. We’ve already been boat raced by Iowa State, so I didn’t have much hope for this one, I’ll be honest.
They say “it’s the hope that will kill you,” and I’m starting to realize more and more how true that statement is. If you could look at this game in a vacuum, there is an argument to be made that for at least part of the first half, it was the worst that Houston has played this year. The problem? It is by far the worst we’ve played all year (maybe ever) as we didn’t hit double digits until there was 3:51 seconds left in the first half.
I wish that there was just one person who was busting our ass, honestly. It wouldn’t reduce the sting that much, but it would be better than admitting that every single player on their team is better than we are. They do have some top end talent like Kingston Flemings who’s widely regarded as a top 3 point guard in the nation. He might even be a lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft, but he’s had a really pedestrian half scoring 4 points and grabbing 2 rebounds. This massacre that I’m watching is being fueled by the power of friendship, and we just can’t compete.
At the half it’s pretty clear why we’re losing. We’re shooting 26% from the floor, when we’re not shooting like shit we’re turning the ball over (7), and when we aren’t doing either of those things we’re fouling the shit out of them (11–6). This team is better than we are, plain and simple. There isn’t really any shame in that; this team has been in National Championship contention for what seems like a decade at this point, so this outcome was kind of expected. The only thing I can hope for in the second half is that we claw back a little and stop embarrassing ourselves.
UNFORTUNATELY, we couldn’t stop embarrassing ourselves. There was one point early in the second half where it seemed like we had some fight in us, but EVERY time we had a big play, Houston answered in a matter of seconds. This was just one of those games where you knew you were going to lose pretty early on and wished you could fast forward. The only thing we can do is dust ourselves off and try to forget about this one.
Despite the humiliating loss, The Roundball Big 3 of the Game:
DJ Thomas — 16 points, 1 steal
Honor Huff — 13 points, 1 steal
Treysen Eaglestaff — 7 points, 4 rebounds
The beauty of college basketball is that you have a limited amount of days to mope, or celebrate, before the next game. We’re coming back home on Saturday as we take on Colorado, and while I was really hoping that we could knock off two top 25 teams in 4 days, it’ll be nice to not play such stiff competition.
Rough day at the office, but there are worse things to be doing than rooting for our favorite team. I love you, Pops. I’ll see you Saturday.
