What a difference a few weeks makes. I was already riding a pretty large high from the Wizards trading for Trae Young. I know a lot could be said about his playstyle but what can’t be denied is his elite playmaking ability. Based on that alone he was going to be a net positive for this team, not even mentioning what he can teach to guys like Tre Johnson and Bub Carrington.
I was content with seeing what Trae would be able to do with this very young team next year. The lob passes to Alex Sarr, the aforementioned mentoring of Tre and Bub, and getting the best out of Bilal Coulibaly was enough to get me excited. Then we go and get Anthony Davis AND it didn’t take that much to get him? I AM HYPE RIGHT NOW.
I will certainly miss Khris Middleton, Malaki Branham, A.J. Johnson, and Marvin Bagley, but I mean… It’s Anthony Davis. We HAD to go out and get him. I know what some of you may be thinking: “he’s always hurt!” To that I say, fooey.
The last two years of AD’s career have not been very normal. Last year he’s part of the biggest trade in NBA history of Luka Doncic, and this year the writing was on the wall all year long that he wasn’t going to last in Dallas. The year prior to all of this though? AD played 76 games which is the most that he has EVER played in his career. I have reason to believe that he was finding a way to stay healthy in this stage of his career and we’re about to be the beneficiaries of that.
Even if he isn’t, if I’m wrong and he goes back to being hurt for half of the year, what he can teach to Alex Sarr is going to be invaluable. There’s a real possibility that we’ll have a 33 year old Anthony Davis AND a 21 year old Anthony Davis on our team next year and that should scare the rest of the league.
The Wizards are in SUCH a good position right now, which couldn’t have been said a couple of months ago. We are truly having our cake and eating it too. We’re going to be competitive in the short term from the sheer starpower of Trae Young and Anthony Davis, and we’re going to be set up for the future with those two mentoring our youth. If you think we couldn’t have a brighter future than that I’m here to tell you that we can because we have 10 future first round picks at our disposal, INCLUDING a potential top 3 pick in this year’s loaded class. So we’re looking at a core roster of Tre Johnson, Bub Carrington, Trae Young, Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Anthony Davis, AND one of Darren Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, or Cam Boozer.
Like I said, the Wizards have the BRIGHTEST future in the entire league.
